Topaz is the birthstone for November and the anniversary gemstone for the 4th and 23rd year of marriage. Known to the Ancient Egyptians as the “Gem of the Sun”, Topaz was believed to be colored by the golden glow of their sun god Ra, and thus a powerful protector from harm. Greeks and Romans also associated the golden crystals with their Sun God, Jupiter. They believed the gem increased their strength and could neutralize enchantments. Topaz comes in a wide array of colors including Pink, Blue, Yellow, Orange-Pink, Green, Blue-Green, White and even Bi-color. The most rare color of Topaz is Imperial Topaz, a pink/peach shade. Topaz is found around the globe in Australia, Brazil, Russia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Nigeria, Mozambique, Pakistan, Norway and China. The newest hottest color of Topaz is a silver topaz, which is the natural color of Topaz before any treatments are done. There are a lot of treatments being done to Topaz right now with vaporization that changes only the surface color of the stone. This is sometimes referred to as Rainbow Topaz or Mystic Topaz. This color is not permanent. All of our stones at Big Island Jewelers are natural stones without any surface treatments done.
